PTE Repeat Sentence: how to remember and repeat every word

How PTE Repeat Sentence works and is scored, plus techniques to remember longer sentences and repeat them fluently.

In Repeat Sentence, you hear a sentence once and repeat it exactly. It counts towards both speaking and listening, so it's worth practising every day.

How it's scored

PTE scores content (how many words you repeat, in the right order), pronunciation and oral fluency. A smooth answer with one or two small words missing usually beats a hesitant word-perfect one.

Techniques that work

  • Chunk the sentence. Hear it as three or four phrases, not ten words: 'The lecture / has been moved / to the main hall / this afternoon'.
  • Picture it. Imagining the scene makes it stick.
  • Start straight away. Begin speaking as soon as the recording finishes, while it's fresh.
  • Copy the rhythm. Repeat at the speaker's pace, with the same stress and pauses.
  • Never stop. If you forget a word, carry on; restarting hurts fluency.

Frequently asked questions

What if I can't remember the whole sentence?
Say the parts you remember, fluently and in order. Partial content with good fluency still earns marks.
