What does the test measure?
Emotional intelligence is how well you recognise and manage emotions, your own and other people's. This test looks at five areas:
- Self-awareness: Noticing your emotions as they happen and knowing how they affect you.
- Self-control: Managing strong emotions and impulses, and staying calm under pressure.
- Motivation: Keeping going towards your goals, and recovering from setbacks.
- Empathy: Understanding how other people feel and seeing things from their side.
- Social skills: Communicating clearly, handling conflict and working well with others.
Answer honestly, thinking about how you usually are rather than how you'd like to be. There are no right or wrong answers.
Frequently asked questions
- What is emotional intelligence?
- Emotional intelligence (EQ) is the ability to recognise, understand and manage your own emotions, and to understand and respond well to other people's. It's often described in five areas: self-awareness, self-control, motivation, empathy and social skills.
- How long does the EQ test take?
- About 5 minutes: 25 short statements, each answered from "Strongly disagree" to "Strongly agree".
- Is this a scientific or clinical test?
- No. It's a free self-reflection tool to help you think about your emotional skills. It isn't a validated psychometric or clinical assessment.
- Can emotional intelligence be improved?
- Yes. EQ skills such as naming your emotions, pausing before reacting and active listening improve with regular practice.
- Why does EQ matter for interpreters?
- Interpreters work in stressful, emotional situations, such as hospitals, courts and Centrelink. Staying calm, reading the speakers and keeping a neutral, respectful tone are all emotional skills, and they matter in the NAATI CCL test too.
