How to prepare for the NAATI CCL: a 4-week study plan

A practical 4-week plan to pass the NAATI CCL: vocabulary by topic, note-taking, timed mock tests and how to review your mistakes.

Most people who fail the CCL know both languages well. They lose marks because they miss details under pressure. This plan builds the three skills that fix that: vocabulary, note-taking and accuracy under time pressure. Give it about an hour a day.

Week 1: know the test and the words

  • Read what the CCL is and how it's marked, so you know what examiners look for.
  • Learn 10 to 15 terms a day from the glossary: tenancy, legal, Centrelink, health and immigration words come up again and again.
  • Test yourself with the glossary quiz in both directions until you score 8/10 or better.

Week 2: note-taking

  • Practise writing only keywords: numbers, names, dates, and one word per idea.
  • Use symbols: ↑ for increase, → for leads to, ✗ for not, $ for money, a small circle for a person.
  • Replay a segment, take notes, then interpret from your notes alone. See our note-taking techniques.

Week 3: full mock tests

  • Sit a full mock test under real conditions: one listen, no pausing, interpret straight away.
  • Record your answers. Afterwards compare them with the model renditions and note every omission.
  • Keep a list of phrases you hesitated on, and learn them the next day.

Week 4: polish and consistency

  • Do a mock test every second day and track your score. Aim to be comfortably above the pass mark in both dialogues.
  • Work on register: speak in the first person ("I have pain", not "she says she has pain"), and use the polite form of address.
  • Rest the day before the test and check your microphone, headset and internet connection.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to prepare for the CCL?
Most confident bilingual speakers need 3 to 6 weeks of regular practice. If you rarely use one of your languages, allow longer.
Can I take notes in the CCL?
Yes. Short keyword notes help you remember numbers, names and the order of ideas, which is where most marks are lost.
