What is the NAATI CCL test? A complete guide

What the NAATI CCL test is, who it's for, how the two dialogues work, the pass mark and how it earns 5 points for an Australian skilled visa.

The NAATI CCL (Credentialed Community Language) test checks whether you can interpret a conversation between an English speaker and a speaker of your community language. Passing it earns 5 bonus points on the points test for many Australian skilled visas, which is why thousands of migrants sit it every year.

Who should take the CCL?

The CCL is for people who speak English and another language well and want extra points for a skilled visa, such as the subclass 189, 190 or 491. It is not a professional interpreting qualification: it recognises community-level language skills. NAATI offers it in dozens of languages, from Arabic and Hindi to Nepali, Punjabi, Mandarin and Vietnamese.

How the test works

  • You hear two dialogues, each a conversation between an English speaker and a speaker of your language.
  • Each dialogue is split into short segments of up to about 35 words. After each one, you interpret it into the other language.
  • The situations are everyday community settings: housing, health, Centrelink and welfare, legal, immigration, education, employment and more.
  • Your answers are recorded and marked by NAATI examiners afterwards.

The pass mark

Each dialogue is marked out of 45, for a total of 90. To pass you need at least 29/45 in each dialogue and 63/90 overall. Marks are taken off for omissions, distortions, unjustified additions and problems with register or delivery, so accuracy matters more than speed. Read how the CCL is marked for the details.

How to prepare

The best preparation is realistic practice: listen to a segment once, interpret it straight away, and check what you missed. Build vocabulary for the common topics, practise note-taking, and time yourself. Our 4-week study plan walks through it step by step, and you can sit a free mock test with natural voices and examiner-style marking.
